The 2020 edition of the Mining Media Awards has been oversubscribed with 51 entries submitted by journalists vying to scoop awards at the awards ceremony which will be hosted virtually on the 25th of September 2020.

The awards which are organised by Minex reward excellence and impactful reporting in the mining sector.

Minex chairman Munyaradzi Hwengwere underscored the centrality of information dissemination and the role of journalists in the narratives of mining and agriculture value chains.

“Information management is central to any effective functioning of value chains and Zimbabwe as a country is driven primarily by agriculture and mining. We have come to the conclusion that without a functional and effective information and media system, the value chain will also not perform to expectation.

“So, it is useless to talk about USD 8.2 billion in agriculture without talking about the story of agriculture. Its useless to talk about USD 12 billion for mining without stories for mining. It is stories that inspire, it is stories that direct attention, it is stories that attract human capital into a field, it is stories that ensure that people work productively,” he said.

Hwengwere noted that Zimbabweans have now recognised their central role in the two sectors and urged mining companies to come on board in support of the awards.

“We think that for the first time we are realising that Zimbabweans have understood that they are at the centre of the country’s primary value drivers which are mining and agriculture.

“We had a good subscription in the Zimbabwe Agricultural Media Awards held last month. We have an even bigger subscription in the Mining Media Awards. What is remaining is for the beneficiaries who are the miners to come on board in a similar way,” said the Minex chairman.

Due to the limitation imposed by covid-19 the 2020 awards, which are the seventh edition since inception will be held virtually and streamed on Standard Online, the official media partner, Heart and Soul, YAFM, Slymedia, 263 chat and zimeye Facebook pages at 12pm on the 25th of September 2020.

Sponsorship opportunities are open in nine categories including the Overall Mining Sector Best Reporter Award. The other categories are Gold Sector, Artisanal and Small Scale Mining Sector, Platinum Sector Corporate Social Responsibility, Health and Safety, Electronic Media, Diamond Sector and Chrome Sector Best Reporter.
