Manicaland Mine Takes Illegal Miners Into The Formal Fold.

The Manicaland Miners Association says stakeholders in the province are making efforts to end illegal mining by employing illegal miners who have in the past been blamed for violence, land degradation and many other social and environmental ills.

In an interview with the Great Dyke News 24 reporter Tatenda Mutero Manicaland Miners Association chairperson Lovemore Kasha said the authorities at Redwing mine have come up with an employment scheme that accommodates miners and helps end illegal mining activities.

An estimated 400 000 miners operate illegally in Zimbabwe with advocates of formalisation of their mining activities arguing this would improve livelihoods, gold receipts and safeguard the environment.

Operation Chikorokoza Ngachipere has seen more than 50 000 arrested by the police in recent months.
