Buy Zimbabwe has called for a viable motor manufacturing industry in Zimbabwe to boost the country’s economy as well as creating employment for the local people.

According to Buy Zimbabwe Acting General Manager Ms. Vandudzai Zirebwa , the move is part of the government’s efforts to resuscitate the Zimbabwe motor industry.

“The Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (PRAZ) and the Motor Industry Association of Zimbabwe (MIAZ) organised a conference in Harare on 9 April 2019.

“The Conference which ran under the theme, “Towards Vision 2030: Articulation of Strategies and Policy Position to Support Domestic Motor Industry for Competitive Advantage” is part of the government’s efforts to resuscitate the Zimbabwe motor industry,”she said.

She added that the motor manufacturing industry is expected to create over 20 000 jobs.

“The motor manufacturing industry will boost the Zimbabwe economy as a whole as well as creating employment for the local people. Operating at its full capacity, the motor manufacturing industry is expected to create over 20 000 jobs.

“By manufacturing motor vehicles locally, it means there will be reduced importation of motor vehicles as compared to what’s happening now hence reduced trade deficit.

“Statistics indicate that motor vehicle imports gobbled a huge amount of foreign currency averaging US$500 millionper year for the past 11 years. If the industry produces quality vehicles suitable for the international market, this will also bring the much needed foreign currency in the country,”she added.

Buy Zimbabwe is a social enterprise at the forefront of advocating for a more viable, inclusive, sustainable and internally acceptable industry support system based on incentives for increased value chain based local procurement and disincentives for continued importation of finished products and services.
