ZMF Calls For Formalisation Of ASM To Curb Accidents.

The Zimbabwe Miners Federation says government should act speedily to ensure artisanal mining is formalised and the work of the miners is regulated to curb accidents.

“Artisanal mining is a livelihood activity countrywide, that’s why if you look at the numbers of people that are mining illegally they are plus or minus 1,5 million, who we need to put in the mainstream economy so that the government also benefits,” said Takavarasha.

Meanwhile Zimbabwe Civil Protection Unit Director Nathan Nkomo said players in the mining sector and the CPU need to meet and come up with a mitigation plan.

“l’m of the view that we need to quickly meet with the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development and the various players in the mining sector especially the mining giants so that we chart the way forward on how best we can come up with a mitigation plan,” said Nkomo.

This year mining-related accidents have claimed over 50 lives mainly in the ASM sector.
