GMB management slammed for stockpiling maize

Authorities in the Midlands say there is a massive backlog in the distribution of social welfare relief maize despite some of the grain being stocked at Grain Marketing Board depots while villagers are in dire need of the staple food in the villages.

Speaking at Zvishavane GMB yesterday Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Honourable Larry Mavhima castigated management at the depot for gross incompetence in the handling of a commodity that is important to the livelihoods of thousands of people.

The Minister delivered 12.7tonnes of mealie-meal in Zvishavane District which is expected to benefit at 1200 people.

World Food Projections indicate that the number of food-insecure Zimbabweans is likely to increase by almost 50 per cent by the end of 2020 with about 8.6 million people, including 5.3 million people in rural areas expected be food insecure due to the combined effects of drought, economic recession and the COVID-19 pandemic.
