Officially, coronavirus has killed 491,793people and infected more than 9, 7 million worldwide with Brazil recording the highest number of daily cases. The country also recorded the highest number of new deaths as 1,180 cases were recorded.

The United States saw a record number of new coronavirus cases in a single day with 40,841 reported cases, marking the biggest daily increase in the country since the start of the pandemic. Several states across the US have reported record rises in cases this week, including Texas, Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Wyoming.

Latin America and the Caribbean surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, more than half of them in Brazil, according to an AFP count based on official figure. The pandemic is accelerating across the region, which now has a total of 2.1 million cases, with Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Chile the most-affected countries.

The Department of Health in South Africa announced that the country had recorded 6 579 new Covid-19 infections, the highest number yet in 24 hours. The number of confirmed positive cases now stands at 118 375, exactly 113 days since the country recorded its first case. 87 more deaths have been recorded, taking the death toll to 2 292; the number of recoveries is 59 974, which translates to a recovery rate of 50.7%. The Western Cape still has the highest number of cases as the province currently has 56,780 cases recorded and the Eastern Cape currently has the second highest number of cases of 20 487.
