There was a slight drop in the number of new cases recorded yesterday as 99,938 cases were recorded to bring the total number of cases to be 5,407, 350. 4,183 new deaths were recorded worldwide to bring the total death toll to 343,608.
The USA has more than 1.6 million cases. And a top infectious disease expert said it’s “conceivable” the US could have a coronavirus vaccine by December.
In Europe, more than two million cases of the new coronavirus have been officially declared in Europe, nearly two-thirds of which were reported in Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France.
Brazil recorded 16,508 new cases within 24 hours to bring the total number of cases to 349,113 and 965 new deaths were recorded hence the death toll is now at 22, 013. 1
In Africa, a total of 109,470 cases and 44,166 recoveries have been recorded.
South Africa has the highest number of cases in Africa and yesterday the number of positive Covid-19 cases rose to 21 343, with 10 more deaths being reported. This brings the number of deaths to 407, with 10 104 recoveries. The number of tests conducted has risen to 564 370, with 21 338 being done in the last 24 hours.
Number of cases that have been reported to have recovered in Zimbabwe has risen to 23 and the number of cases still stands at 56 with 4 deaths reported.
Early results from convalescent plasma study are encouraging, researchers say
Hospitalized Covid-19 patients appear to fare better when they receive infusions of antibody-filled convalescent plasma, according to a study released on Friday. The study hasn’t been peer reviewed or published in an academic journal, but researchers said the findings are a good sign for the plasma therapy, which is derived from the blood of recovered Covid-19 patients. Researchers are “remaining mindful that additional studies are needed to confirm these findings and draw more definitive conclusions in different populations,” she said.
