The total number of cases worldwide is now 1,699,632 with 102,734 deaths. The US could soon surpass Italy as the country with the most coronavirus deaths worldwide as the US has 18 747 closely following Italy with 18 849 deaths.

The US became the first country in the world to record more than 2,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day. Figures from Johns Hopkins University show 2,108 people died in the past 24 hours while there are now more than half a million confirmed infections.

France on Friday reported 987 more COVID-19 deaths registered in hospitals and nursing homes over the last 24 hours, although the number of patients in intensive care fell for the second day in a row.

Deaths from the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy rose by 570 on Friday, down from 610 the day before, and the number of new cases also slowed modestly to 3,951 from a previous 4,204. Italywill remain in full lockdown until May 3 to stem the tide of new coronavirus infections, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Friday.

The number of Covid-19 deaths in South Africa increased from 18 to 24 on the 10th of April. The number of new cases rose by 69 to make them a total of 2, 003. There are a total of 410 cases that have been reported to have recovered. A total of 73 028 tests have been conducted.

Zimbabwe’s total number of cases has risen to 13 from 11; the number of deaths remains at 3 while there have been no recorded recoveries from the virus. 

Zambia has one new death and one new case recoded to make them 40 cases and 2 deaths. 25 cases have been recorded to have recovered.

Mozambican Covid-19 cases increased from 17 to 20 with no deaths recorded as yet and 2 cases having been reported to have recovered. 

Eswatini’s number of cases did not changed but 7 cases were reported to have recovered. 

Apple and Google team up to contact trace Covid-19

Apple and Google are jointly developing technology to alert people if they have recently come into contact with others found to be infected with coronavirus. Their contact-tracing method would work by using a smartphone’s Bluetooth signals to determine to whom the owner had recently been in proximity for long enough to have established contagion a risk.
